Program Outline

Get ready to embark on an exhilarating journey of growth and empowerment with our flagship program for Youth Outdoor Leadership & Facilitation. In this basic course, across three modules, each consisting of five action-packed days, we will equip you with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to ignite the spark of connection to nature within the hearts of young outdoor lovers. From mastering the art of outdoor facilitation to honing your facilitation prowess, this unique program will unleash the talents in you and unlock your true potential as a catalyst to foster personal growth and sustainable living mindset.

After completing this basic course, you will have the necessary knowledge and skills to create and conduct interactive programs by yourself while using nature as a learning field.

Module 1: Basics of learning and facilitation

  • Getting to know each other: sharing personal stories,
  • What it means to be a Youth Outdoor Leader and Facilitator,
  • Self-assessments on your current knowledge and skills in Leadership and Facilitation,
  • Getting to know basic principles on how people learn,
  • Experiencing learning models,
  • Basic understanding of a facilitation process,
  • Learning the main differences between a facilitator, trainer, and coach,
  • Getting to know what effective communication means,
  • Introduction to the main tools and approaches to effective communication,
  • Learning about phases of group development,
  • Emotional intelligence and why it matters,
  • Basic understanding of conflict management,
  • Learn how to keep clear and open interaction among participants in different situations,
  • Practice nonviolent communication,
  • Feedback & feedforward.

Module 2: Basics of outdoor education

  • Basic tools for facilitation in the outdoor setting,
  • Preparing for the trip and packing the backpack,
  • Outdoor camp management: place, size, technical aspects,
  • Practicing outdoor skills: fire, water, food, weather, clouds, orientation, map reading,
  • Practice first aid in the outdoor setting,
  • Risk Management,
  • Experience facilitation methodologies for the outdoor setting.

Module 3: Designing educational outdoor programs

  • Outdoor programme design: tips & tricks,
  • The art of developing outdoor educational programmes,
  • Agenda and curriculum development,
  • The preparation of facilitation,
  • Practice co-facilitation,
  • Navigating through sessions,
  • Learning and applying evaluation techniques,
  • Spotlight on – taking stage.

After successful completion of all three modules, you are given the opportunity to co-facilitate one of the existing YEP training/camps under the guidance of our certified trainers.

This is followed by your certification of the basics in Youth Outdoor Leadershp & Facilitation. Successful graduates can work on a freelance basis as co-outdoor leaders and facilitators at the YEP Academy.

Eligibility:

  • Between 21 and 36 of age,
  • Want to engage with young people and see young people as architects for environmental and social just future,
  • Have experiences or want to work in the youth work field,
  • Good physical fitness,
  • Be able to communicate in English,
  • Have ASEAN citizenship.

Costs:

150 US$

YEP provides:

  • Camping/outdoor equipment and training materials,
  • Facilitation costs,
  • Overnight fees,
  • Food (for entire modules),
  • Transportation (round trip from the departure point in Phnom Penh to the different locations).

You provide:

  • Strong passion for nature, environment and outdoor,
  • High degree of openness and willingness to make learning experiences,
  • Interest in exchange with other like-minded people,
  • Readiness to challenge yourself and stepping out of your comfort zone,
  • Being empathic,
