About the event

🌊Join us for a captivating evening with Dr. Uk Sovannara, one of Cambodia's leading Tonle Sap researchers, as he delves into the intricate and vital ecosystem of Tonle Sap Lake. He will explore the unique hydrology of Tonle Sap, highlighting the lake's annual flooding and receding cycle that fosters a dynamic environment essential for fish, birds, and aquatic life. Beyond its ecological significance, Tonle Sap Lake is a critical source of food and income for millions of Cambodians and is deeply woven into the nation's history and culture.

🦜This talk will also address the lake's crucial role in regulating regional climate patterns and mitigating climate change impacts. However, this precious ecosystem faces severe threats from forest fires, agricultural expansion, hydrological alterations, and other human activities. Deforestation, infrastructure development, and overexploitation of fish resources are depleting populations and affecting food security, while industrial and agricultural runoff contaminate the lake's water, harming aquatic life and human health.

🐟 Dr. UK Sovannara holds advanced degrees in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, and an engineer’s degree in Water Resources and Rural Infrastructure from the Institute of Technology of Cambodia. He also has a Bachelor's degree in Education from the Royal University of Phnom Penh. He has taught at multiple universities in Cambodia and worked as a teaching and research assistant in Japan. He will highlight successful conservation initiatives and community-based projects, emphasizing sustainable fishing practices and alternative livelihoods. Don't miss this opportunity to learn about the challenges and solutions for preserving Tonle Sap Lake's ecosystem from one of Cambodia's foremost experts.
